Lens Implant Options
During cataract surgery, artificial lenses are implanted in the eye to replace the cloudy natural lenses. Based on your eye measurements and vision goals we will help guide you towards a lens that provides you the optimal results. There are 3 different categories of lens implants that we consider when evaluating patients for surgery: standard monofocal lens, toric astigmatism correcting lens, and premium active lifestyle lens implants. Each lens has a distinct profile and benefits.
Standard Monofocal Lens
The standard monofocal lens implant is designed to have a singular focal point, which can achieve either good distance, intermediate or near vision. The lens can only be targeted for ONE of these ranges which means you will need to wear glasses in order to see well for the remaining two visual ranges. Most patients opt to have their monofocal lens implant set for distance vision, which means they will require glasses for intermediate and near vision activities. Often times, many nearsighted people choose to have their monofocal lens implants set for near vision. As a result they require glasses for distance and intermediate vision activities. These lenses work best in eyes that have minimal to no astigmatism. Your surgeon will help you determine which visual target is best for you during your consultation.
Toric Astigmatism Correcting Lens
This is a monofocal lens with built-in astigmatism correction. Astigmatism occurs when the cornea, rather than being spherically shaped like a basketball, is instead more oblong shaped like a football. This distortion in the corneal shape leads to a blurring of vision at distance and near that cannot simply be corrected by a standard monofocal lens.
The toric lens corrects for this corneal distortion allowing the image to appear clear and sharp. Patients with astigmatism tend to be quite happy and satisfied with a toric implant because it affords them a degree of visual clarity that they would not have achieved with the standard lens.

Multifocal Lenses
These lenses are designed to provide the patient with maximum visual independence by minimizing or eliminating the need for glasses. As we age our lens loses the ability to focus at near tasks. Multifocal lenses are designed to restore this capability through creating zones or rings in the lens implant aimed for distance, intermediate and near vision correction. The technology behind these lenses has rapidly improved over the past few decades yielding excellent results. Your surgeon can help you determine whether you are a good candidate for this lens.
Light Adjustable Lens
The RxSight™ Light Adjustable Lens is the first and only intraocular lens (IOL) that can be customized after cataract surgery. The Light Adjustable Lens is made of a special photosensitive material that can be adjusted in response to ultraviolet (UV) light. This optimization is done by your eye doctor in the weeks following lens implantation through a series of non-invasive light treatments that take only a few minutes each. You will have the unique ability to adjust and preview your vision until it meets your personal desires and lifestyle requirements. The Light Adjustable Lens delivers superior vision outcomes that non-adjustable IOLs cannot match.
